Rising Childcare Costs in Australia

Scott Morrison is only in it for himself and doesn't care about you.

That’s why when things go wrong – whether it is the bushfire response or the COVID-19 vaccine rollout – he doesn’t take charge. But when things go right, he’s the first to take credit.

Scott Morrison’s new childcare policy does little to solve the problem that he helped create – namely, that since the Liberals and Nationals came to power in 2013, childcare fees have risen in Australia by 38%.

Australians now pay some of the highest childcare fees in the world. The average family spends nearly 20% of their income on childcare costs – double the global average.

100,000 Australian families are now unable to access childcare due to the astronomically-high costs which have occurred on Scott Morrison’s watch.

Affordable childcare is vital to Australia’s future.  Fundamental reform in the sector will help our country by providing a significant boost both to workforce participation and economic growth.

Scott Morrison’s new childcare policy may have been front-and-centre in the 2021 Federal Budget, but it’s yet another example of “all announcement, no delivery”.

Analysis shows that hundreds of thousands of Australian families would be better off under an Albanese Labor Government compared to Scott Morrison’s latest announcement.

Labor’s policy will help one million Australian families – four times as many as the Liberals.

86% of all families – 860,000 families – with children aged under six in the childcare system are better off under Labor’s policy compared to the Liberals.

Compare this with Labor's childcare policy, which ensures equity and accessibility for all Australians families, will help control fees and result in a boost to GDP three times as large as the Liberals.

The evidence is clear.

Labor is on your side.  Scott Morrison and the Liberals are not.

Scott Morrison is not interested in what you or your family need.

He’s not on your side. He’s only in it for himself.

What you need to know

86% of Australian families better off under Labor

Scott Morrison is all announcement, no delivery – and this is true for his new childcare scheme policy, too. New analysis shows that at least 86 percent of Australian families would be better off under an Albanese Labor Government.

Hundreds of thousands of families worse off now – and into the future

Under the Liberals and Nationals, childcare costs have risen by 38% - meaning Australian families are now paying some of the highest childcare costs in the world. Scott Morrison’s new policy has limited benefits for the overwhelming majority of Australian families.

Labor’s Childcare Policy has broad benefit for all Australians

Analysis by the Grattan Institute shows that Labor’s childcare policy will benefit “all families who use childcare… regardless of the number of children, their age and the family income.” The policy will also lead to a significant increase in workforce participation, resulting in a boost to GDP that’s three times larger compared to Scott Morrison’s policy.
